Anne-Marie Langan
Anne-Marie Langan is a descendant of many pioneers, revolutionaries and adventurers. It is rumored that her mother is distantly related the great French revolutionary, Robespierre. Her great grandfather, Mr. Perrier, was the chief engineer of the Suez Canal and her great grand uncle (by marriage), Mr. Bleriot, was the first person ever to cross the English Channel by airplane.
Anne-Marie LanganAnne-Marie has the same adventurous and pioneering spirit as her ancestors had. Even prior to graduating from the McGill School of Social Work, she had already designed and implemented an award winning employment program for people who had chronic mental illness which provided catering and other services to the residents of Dorval, Quebec.
After graduating, she worked with chronically homeless, mentally ill, substance abusers in Anchorage, Alaska and Newmarket and assisted in developing two programs designed to break the vicious cycle of homelessness and to reintegrate chronically homeless people into the “main stream”. It was her work with the homeless that taught Anne-Marie that there is no such thing as a “hopeless case”.
Anne-Marie’s passion for family law began in law school. She thought that she would become a legal aid lawyer, but thanks to the fantastic family law professors at Queen’s Law School, Anne-Marie found that she had an uncanny interest in helping people who were struggling with separation and divorce. During her years at Queen’s, Anne-Marie implemented a program at the Kingston Family Court, through the Pro Bono Students Canada Program, where law students from Queen’s went to the court on busy motion days and assisted unrepresented litigants to fill out forms and become oriented to the court process. Anne-Marie also did a research project about unrepresented litigants which was published in the Queen’s Law Journal in the spring of 2005.
Anne-Marie graduated from Queen’s in 2004 and articled at Carter and Associates in Orangeville. While she was articling there, the only family lawyer in the firm decided to move on. Anne-Marie enthusiastically took on the family law cases. She stayed working at Carter’s for a year and a half, mainly focusing on family law and gaining valuable litigation experience.
Thanks in large part to Barbara Landau, Anne-Marie became very interested in practicing Collaborative Family Law and took her level 1 and 2 training in Collaborative Law and mediation with Barbara. One day while she was working away at Carter’s, Barbara sent her an email stating that a Collaborative Lawyer in Barrie, Mr. Brian Galbraith, was looking for a new associate. Anne-Marie knew right away that this is where she was meant to be. She is now happily working away at Galbraith Family Law and assisting Brian in developing Collaborative Team Practice, and is finding her work here very rewarding.
